Moving home is an exciting time and a great opportunity for a fresh start. At Cameron Homes, we understand that good preparation is the key to a stress-free move, therefore, we’ve put together some of our top tips on how to make moving day as relaxed as possible:

1. Book your movers in advance

Whether you’re opting to hire professional movers or rent a moving van yourself, then we recommend booking as far in advance as possible. During peak seasons, booking 8-12 weeks in advance is recommended to secure your preferred date and time. Most removal companies allow you to choose a provisional moving date before you have exchanged. Once you are given your completion date, you can then confirm your moving date with the removals company.

2. Declutter and pack early

Start decluttering and packing early to manage the workload and reduce stress before the move. Go through each room in your home and pack anything that you know you won’t be using anytime soon. It’s a good idea to donate what you no longer need to a charity shop and take anything that doesn’t work to your nearest recycling centre.

3. Label your boxes

It’s important that you label all boxes clearly by room to avoid confusion when unpacking. Using different coloured packing tape for each room can also make it easier to identify where to unload the boxes.

4. Moving day essentials

Pack a separate ‘first night’ bag or box with everything you’ll need when you arrive at your new home, including toiletries, a change of clothes, chargers, snacks and bedding. The last thing you want to be doing is digging through boxes at the end of a long day.

5. Defrost appliances

If you’re taking your fridge and freezer with you, then it’s recommended that you defrost them before moving to make the transportation process safer and easier.

6. Plan for children and pets

With disrupted routines and lots to be done on the day, it’s a good idea to plan ahead for any little ones and furry friends. Perhaps a family member or friend could babysit or pet-sit on moving day, and maybe even explore the option of boarding pets. This will ensure a safer and more efficient move for everyone involved.

7. Check the weather

It’s important to check the weather forecast the day before the move and prepare accordingly – use tarps, plastic covers or umbrellas to keep both you and your belongings dry during a surprise downpour.

8. What to wear on moving day

On moving day, prioritise comfort and practicality as you’ll likely be lifting and carrying a lot throughout the day. Keep cold water bottles on hand, and wear lightweight, breathable clothing.

9. Explore your new neighbourhood

Once you’re settled in, go out and enjoy your new surroundings by exploring your new neighbourhood. Set aside some time to meet your new neighbours and find your local parks or coffee shops to really start feeling at home.

10. Don’t forget to celebrate

When all the hard work is done, treat yourself to your favourite takeout, or even host a housewarming party with your nearest and dearest - you’ve earned it!

We hope our moving day checklist will help the process run as smoothly as possible. And if you've not yet found the perfect home, you can see all of our available developments here
